Weekend Itinerary
Friday
Vierula non-alcoholic sparkling drinks and a light snack will be waiting in the apartment, so you can celebrate your shared weekend as soon as everyone arrives. The apartment is ready from 5 PM.
Storytelling house tour
On Friday evening, you may join a house tour and discover the history of this merchant’s house completed in 1939, along with the private living quarters of the women who live here.
During the snow-free season, you may also explore the grandmother’s traditional kitchen garden surrounding Unelma.
If you are interested in wild herbs, either tour can end with a Wild Herb Power Tea moment in Piia’s kitchen.
You will also hear about local history and what else Mäntyharju has to offer.
Afterwards, the rest of the evening is yours to enjoy privately.
There will be a touch of surprise as well, as I have prepared something that will surely lead you into interesting conversations during the evening.
Saturday
A slow and relaxed morning with breakfast ready in the apartment.
Salmela and Church Village
During the day you can explore Art center Salmela and enjoy the beautiful church village surroundings.
Exhibitions are open daily 6 June–15 August 2026 from 11:00 to 18:00.
Enjoy lunch at Kesäheinä Restaurant and coffee at the village kiosk. Nearby nature church surroundings are also worth visiting.
Within walking distance are the beautiful wooden church and the Iso-Pappila museum area with Veteran Park.
Boutiques and Town Centre
Before heading to Salmela, you may visit the small boutiques and local shops in Mäntyharju town centre.
Many shops close at 2 PM on summer weekends and at 5 PM on weekdays. Makasiini Shop & Café is often open longer.
My favorites are Puoti Suerte, Tarjan Muotipuoti, Makasiinin Puoti & Kahvila, Reissukirppis, Kukkakeidas and Kaluste-Kippari. All of them situated in the village center.

Concert or Summer Theater?
For Saturday evening, you may wish to book one of Salmela’s concerts or a summer theater performance.
In Mäntyharju there is two summer theaters. The other one is called Mäntyharju's summer theater and is located in the old village center, inside the Iso-Pappila museum area, within short walk from Art center Salmela.
Craft Brewery
Nilkko Taproom is another enjoyable local destination, especially for artisan beer lovers.
Restaurants or Private Dinner
Many restaurants close between 5 PM and 7 PM even in summer, so availability is worth checking in advance.
Cooking together is easy at Unelma. Nearby shops include S-market, K-Supermarket, and M-Market only about 30 metres away.
Distances
Church village / Salmela area: approx. 4 km
Town centre approx. 1 km and train station approx. 850 m. If arriving by train, house bicycles are included in this package.
Sunday
Sunday is reserved for a peaceful departure day, but there is still time for sightseeing.
Standard check-out is at 12 PM. Extra hours may be arranged in advance.
Café and Flea Market Tour
Walk through the historic wooden house district or visit Makasiini Shop & Café.
Mäntykirppis flea market is often open on Sundays.
It is worth allowing 1–2 hours for this kind of outing, even though the distance is only about 2 kilometres.
Along the way, you will pass the beautiful Rantapuisto area (currently being landscaped during summer 2026) as well as the town centre with its market square.
Self-Guided Garden Visit
You may also explore the garden surrounding Unelma independently.
The courtyard seating area is also a lovely place to enjoy a peaceful morning coffee.
Museums
Mäntyharju has 10 different museums, some also open on Sundays.
If you head south, stop by Miekankoski Café, where you can also visit the free Log Floating Museum.
Ryönänhovi garden
Located about 15 minutes by car from Unelma, Ryönänhovi Garden is open on summer Sundays for a small entrance fee. I highly recommend!
Nature and Culture Destinations
If you head south towards Kouvola by car, you can visit Repovesi National Park and hike the Ketunlenkki Trail, or challenge yourself with a climb to Olhava Rock.
The UNESCO World Heritage site Verla Groundwood and Board Mill is also well worth a visit, and in the same direction you will also find the Vuohijärvi Nature and Culture House, part of Taidekeskus Salmela.
To the north, the beautiful Neitvuori area is well worth visiting, and the Mikkeli region also offers several museums as well as beautiful gardens and manor estates.
Guided Nature Experiences and Tours
You can also book a private guided forest experience with lakeside views, for which it’s worth reserving about 2.5 hours.
